Status Quo Trap¶
Frame status quo bias as a named trap a single deliberating actor can counter: recognise that the current course wins only because the switch must be defended while the staying is not, then run the fresh-start counterfactual that forces it to compete on its merits.
Core Idea¶
The status quo trap is the decision-making framing of status quo bias: a deliberating actor choosing between continuing a course and switching to a better-supported alternative sticks with the current course because the cost of changing is weighted disproportionately. Coined by Hammond, Keeney & Raiffa (1998) as a named trap to recognise and counter in individual episodes, it packages the same loss-aversion-around-a-reference-point mechanism plus a prescriptive reframing procedure — the fresh-start counterfactual that re-symmetrises the choice.
Scope of Application¶
Lives wherever a single actor deliberates a discrete "stay or switch" choice and can pose the fresh-start counterfactual.
- Executive decision-making — strategy reviews, product-lifecycle decisions, organisational restructuring.
- Investment portfolio management — rebalancing, corrected by "would I buy this today if I didn't own it?"

Clarity¶
Naming the trap makes legible, inside a single decision, an asymmetry that escapes examination: a proposed change carries the burden of justification while a continuation does not. It exposes that inaction is itself a decision with the same accountability structure, so staying must earn its place. The clarifying payoff is a usable separation between the substantive question (which option is better) and the procedural one (which is framed as current), with the fresh-start counterfactual as the instrument.
Manages Complexity¶
A deliberator meets "stay or switch" in many content-heavy guises. The trap compresses that sprawl by recognising every episode as one structure — a departure surcharge operating inside the deliberation's frame — and isolates a single thing to track: the burden-of-justification asymmetry. That reduces an open, case-specific deliberation to one substantive-versus-procedural split and one counterfactual test whose answer is the qualitative outcome.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The trap licenses a self-applied diagnostic move detecting the burden-of-justification asymmetry in the present frame, an interventionist move supplying the fresh-start counterfactual that is also a test (survives = substantive, flips = artifact), a procedural-versus-substantive split enforcing decision hygiene, and a boundary-drawing move confining inferences to a deliberating actor who can actually pose the counterfactual.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within prescriptive decision-making the trap transfers as mechanism literally across executive strategy, rebalancing, board decisions, policy review, and careers, since all are one frame-level asymmetry corrected by one content-blind counterfactual. It adds no new mechanism over status quo bias — this entry and the bias entry are near-duplicates differing only in perspective. Beyond the deliberator the reach belongs to the parents loss_aversion and reference_point, since a market or gene pool has no fresh-start question to pose; "status quo trap in evolution" is analogy whose real content is inertia or canalization.
