Stimulus–Response Compatibility¶
When a stimulus automatically activates a response code, performance improves if that code agrees with the task-mandated response and degrades if the codes conflict, even when the triggering feature is irrelevant.
Core Idea¶
Stimulus–response compatibility is the family of cognitive effects in which a stimulus feature automatically activates a response code and performance depends on whether that code agrees with the response demanded by the task. Agreement facilitates speed and accuracy; conflict produces latency and errors even when the activating feature is explicitly irrelevant.
