Stream Tee Duplication¶
A stream operation that forwards each accepted item to at least two branch interfaces without partitioning the input sequence.
Core Idea¶
Stream tee duplication offers each accepted stream item, with the same content, at two or more branch interfaces during ordinary successful operation. GNU tee sends bytes to a file and standard output; GStreamer's tee sends media flow to requested source pads. Later consumers may produce different outputs; a checksum or visualization is downstream of the tee handoff.[ref-f793bbb8aa52][ref-2bcbd0cc8354]
Scope of Application¶
Two documented constructions show the operation:
- GNU byte pipeline: downloaded bytes reach
dvd.isoand standard output before downstreamcksum.[^ref-f793bbb8aa52] - GStreamer media pipeline: decoded
song.oggreaches queued audio and visualization branches.[^ref-2bcbd0cc8354]
These are documented examples, not observed deployments. Python's pull-style iterator tee supplies a shared-storage contrast.[^ref-63608d21f9ac]
Clarity¶
Sameness holds at the handoff, not after branch-specific work. Sending odd and even items to different paths partitions the stream; separate interfaces prove neither deep copying nor independent progress or delivery after failure.[ref-f793bbb8aa52][ref-2bcbd0cc8354][^ref-63608d21f9ac]
Manages Complexity¶
Trace the upstream sequence, tee point and branch interfaces before consumers. This separates forwarding from cksum, playback or visualization, and the common relation from GNU's error policy or GStreamer's queues. A blocked branch can affect progress without redefining successful fan-out.[ref-f793bbb8aa52][ref-2bcbd0cc8354]
Abstract Reasoning¶
Use boundary placement, invariant testing and countermodels: locate the handoff, test same-content availability at every branch, then compare partitioning or downstream transformation. Branch count alone is insufficient. Mapping one input sequence to several branch sequences is an analytical summary, not a manual's formula.[ref-f793bbb8aa52][ref-2bcbd0cc8354]
Knowledge Transfer¶
The operation transfers literally between GNU byte pipes and GStreamer media pads: both preserve item content at multiple branch boundaries. Python provides a pull-based comparison, without exporting its storage or thread-safety limits.[ref-f793bbb8aa52][ref-2bcbd0cc8354][^ref-63608d21f9ac] The broader Transformation maps input to altered output under a rule while preserving a declared invariant; other transformations need not tee. A branching picture without stream handoff does not establish this named operation.

-
Stream Tee Duplication is a kind of Transformation Prime
A tee restructures one stream into a two-or-more-interface output under a forwarding rule while preserving each accepted item's content at the branch boundaries.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Stream Tee Duplication sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (64th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
