Core Idea

The Strejc method fits a compact inertial model to an aperiodic process response after an input step. It reads response times, compares a derived value with a restricted model table, and estimates gain and lag parameters.[ref-220d2178bcbd][ref-61e267213668] A graphical variant uses an inflection tangent and repeated equal lags, sometimes with delay. A double-inertia variant uses the time to 70 percent of the final response change and two separately estimated lags. Both require the model-table Comparison as an internal step; neither variant defines the whole name.[ref-220d2178bcbd][ref-61e267213668]

Scope of Application

Use the method where a suitable aperiodic step response can support a compact control-process model; published uses include these settings:

  • Heat-exchanger temperature: heating-water-flow steps support a reported third-order plus-delay fit.[^ref-b7ca5b5a98fe]
  • Coupled-tank level: a tangent/table method and a fitted tank model are reported.[^ref-68a2e8753927]
  • Pilot-reactor temperature: excitation steps support reported unequal fitted lags.[^ref-fd5347fcc9e1]
  • Operating-range modeling: different step sizes or temperature ranges can change fitted parameters.[ref-b7ca5b5a98fe][ref-fd5347fcc9e1]

These papers do not all print their case-specific intermediate table readings, so their reported uses are not complete worked demonstrations. The response's origin, whether physical, previously collected, or simulated, also matters when interpreting the fitted model.

Clarity

The method is the response-to-model procedure; a Strejc model is its possible output. A transfer function alone cannot show how it was identified. The two variants also use different table inputs: the graphical version compares a characteristic-time ratio, while the double-inertia version matches a normalized response height sampled at one quarter of the 70-percent time.[ref-220d2178bcbd][ref-61e267213668] A generic curve fit lacks this prescribed comparison.

Manages Complexity

A long transient becomes gain, lag values and any warranted delay. The graphical table selects an equal-lag order; the double-inertia table matches observed height at \(t_{0.7}/4\) to a model height, giving the two-lag ratio.[ref-220d2178bcbd][ref-61e267213668] The compact fit need not represent every physical lag. The exchanger's parameter intervals and reactor's changing fitted constants show why operating conditions must accompany it.[ref-b7ca5b5a98fe][ref-fd5347fcc9e1]

Abstract Reasoning

Check response suitability, read the chosen variant's characteristic times, make its prescribed table comparison, then estimate model parameters and compare fitted with observed responses.[ref-220d2178bcbd][ref-61e267213668] Add delay only when the selected model form warrants it. Ask which variant fits the tested conditions and whether another step size changes the answer. Where a paper reports only the final fit, its intermediate readings cannot be audited. An oscillatory response lies outside the simple aperiodic construction's supported scope.[ref-b7ca5b5a98fe][ref-61e267213668]

Knowledge Transfer

The same step-response, time-readout, model-table comparison and parameter-estimation roles can be applied to exchanger, tank and reactor dynamics.[ref-b7ca5b5a98fe][ref-68a2e8753927][^ref-fd5347fcc9e1] Carry the variant and operating-range limits with the result. The tank paper uses earlier data for part of its modeling and simulated controller results; those are not new physical-plant validation.[^ref-68a2e8753927] Beyond process dynamics, a tangent and fitted curve are an analogy, not necessarily Strejc identification. The broader Comparison Prime names the indispensable internal alignment, while the named method retains its control-engineering conditions.
