Stroop Effect

Measure cognitive control by the extra time and errors it costs to name a color word's ink when the word disagrees — a competition between an over-trained automatic pathway and a weaker task-relevant one, resolved by top-down inhibition.

Core Idea

The Stroop effect (Stroop, 1935) is the robust finding that naming the ink color of a printed color word is slower and more error-prone when the word names a different color (RED in blue ink) than when they agree, even in fluent readers told to ignore the word. The mechanism is competition between two response pathways of unequal strength feeding one output: reading is automatic and must be actively suppressed by top-down inhibitory control when the task requires the weaker color-naming pathway to win. The reverse interference is far smaller.

Naming the Stroop effect crystallizes the distinction between automatic and controlled processing, and between a response being primed and being selected, putting it in measurable milliseconds with a parametric handle (congruent, neutral, incongruent). Its decisive clarity is localizing the breakdown: not failed perception or comprehension — both pathways succeed — but the cost of overriding the dominant one where they converge on a response, which turns cognitive control from a construct into an assay.
