Structural inequality¶
Persistent unequal advantage produced by the rules, resource distributions and routines of institutions and social networks.
Core Idea¶
Structural mechanisms differ from isolated interpersonal prejudice, though individual action can reproduce them; causal analysis must identify institutions, pathways and comparison groups. Policies, infrastructures and cumulative allocation rules distribute access and exposure unevenly, feeding prior advantage into later education, wealth, health, status or political power. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of sociology. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the institutions and period, groups and comparison, formal and informal rules, resource and opportunity pathways, measurable disparities, feedback and cumulative effects, individual-level alternatives and causal evidence are explicit.
