Subcategory¶
A category whose objects and morphisms are selected from a parent category while retaining the same sources, targets, identity morphisms, and composition.
Core Idea¶
Subcategories formalize restriction of a categorical universe and vary as full, wide, replete, reflective, coreflective, or other typed subclasses depending on which objects and arrows are retained. A subclass of objects and arrows is selected; every retained arrow has retained endpoints, all retained objects keep their parent identities, and the selected arrows are closed under the parent composition. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
