Supporting Effort¶
Tag a concurrent military activity as subordinate to the main effort so that, under scarcity, support and command attention flow to the decisive operation first and the supporting activity yields by design rather than neglect.
Core Idea¶
A supporting effort is any military activity whose purpose is to create conditions, fix or distract the enemy, secure flanks, or sustain logistics so the main effort — the operation decisive for the commander's intent — can succeed. The distinction carries an explicit resource-flow rule: under scarcity, priority of support, risk acceptance, and command attention go to the main effort first, and supporting efforts are deliberately under-resourced because their value is realized only through the main effort's success.
Scope of Application¶
Supporting effort lives within military doctrine and operational planning, enumerated here by the kind of supporting activity and the echelon at which the main/supporting ordering is drawn.

Clarity¶
The label makes legible that priority is non-fungible under scarcity: two operations can both be essential, yet the tag settles in advance who yields. It dissolves the confusion in which every line of operation argues it is "needed," and it names a specific failure mode — the supporting effort whose main effort has been cancelled or already succeeded, yet runs on the original timeline.
Manages Complexity¶
A sprawl of concurrent activities, each claiming to be needed, collapses onto a single ordering keyed to one parameter: each activity's relation to the commander's intent. Once tagged, the flow rule reads straight off the labels, and each supporting effort reduces to a small set of decidable states — keep, redirect, or accept-as-risk.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The distinction licenses a relation-to-intent classification (does success directly or only indirectly produce the decisive outcome?), an interventionist allocation rule (feed the main effort first; choose keep/redirect/cut per effort), and boundary-drawing that separates a supporting effort from a mere dependency, from scaffolding, and from a parallel objective.
