System identification number¶
Broadcast a 15-bit SID code that identifies an AMPS-, TDMA-, or CDMA-family cellular system or service area for roaming and preference decisions.
Core Idea¶
A system identification number is a broadcast numeric identifier assigned to legacy cellular systems so mobiles can recognize home, preferred, and roaming networks.[1] Base stations advertise the code; a mobile compares it with provisioned lists and combines it with other system parameters to select service and roaming behavior. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of cellular telecommunications. It is the legacy cellular broadcast-identifier namespace and selection semantics. That residual remains recognizable when examples, notation, scale, or implementation change, but it disappears if a modern PLMN code is substituted, an arbitrary database ID is called SID, 16-bit internal values are assumed broadcastable, or uniqueness is asserted despite documented conflicts. This gives the entry an operational identity rather than merely a historical label.
A useful analysis keeps three layers separate.
