Tamagotchi Effect¶
Explain why people form real emotional attachment to artificial entities they know aren't alive: a care-requesting cue bundle plus a recurring maintenance demand engages the human caregiving instinct, producing attachment disproportionate to the object's realism.
Core Idea¶
The Tamagotchi effect is the phenomenon in which humans form genuine, behaviourally consequential emotional attachment to artificial non-living entities that present care-eliciting cues — periodic neediness, responsive state-change, infant-like signals — even knowing the entity is not sentient. Named for Bandai's 1996 32-pixel virtual pet, it is defined by three features: the trigger is a care-requesting cue bundle (not realism), the attachment forms under known artificiality, and it is functionally real. The maintenance demand — recurring upkeep for the entity to persist — is the load-bearing feature.

Clarity¶
Naming the effect recasts "users getting attached for unclear reasons" as a designable care-requesting cue bundle, contradicting the intuition that fidelity drives attachment: a 32-pixel device and a plush seal both elicit it, so the operative variable is which care cues are installed and whether the entity imposes recurring maintenance. It also settles whether the attachment matters — because it forms under known artificiality yet is functionally real, the grief is a designed-for consequence, not a category error, and the design lever and exploitation risk are one mechanism.
Manages Complexity¶
The cases of attaching to artificial things form a bewildering spread inviting a separate explanation for each. The effect compresses it by reducing the predictor to three structural features an analyst scores on any artefact, detaching the prediction from fidelity and foreclosing the "it's not real" dismissal. Isolating the maintenance demand as the feature separating this from passive anthropomorphism yields a clean two-sided branch: the same cue-and-maintenance lever builds a benign companion or powers engineered neediness loops.
