Temporal Binding¶
Bind events that fall within a characteristic time window into a single perceived unit by attributing them to a shared source, warping subjective time and location to keep the percept consistent with that attribution.
Core Idea¶
Temporal binding names the perceptual mechanisms by which events falling within a characteristic time window are integrated into a single represented unit, with subjective time warped to bring them together. In the multisensory case, a flash and a beep arriving within tens to hundreds of milliseconds are bound to a common source; in the intentional case, a voluntary action and its effect are perceived as closer in time than they objectively are.
Scope of Application¶
Temporal binding lives across the perception-and-agency subfields of psychology and neuroscience, bounded to a perceiver with a temporal window and a content-similarity gate.

- Sense of agency — intentional binding as a diagnostic for whether an action is experienced as self-caused.

Clarity¶
Naming temporal binding pulls apart temporal proximity, perceived simultaneity, and bound identity — three things ordinary talk runs together. It exposes that the percept is an active attribution, not passive timekeeping, and that the system will warp subjective time to preserve a committed shared source. It also converts the felt sense of agency into a measurable signature: the action-effect compression.
Manages Complexity¶
Temporal binding collapses a scattered catalogue of illusions — ventriloquism, McGurk, common fate, intentional binding — into one engine with a small parameter set: a temporal window, a content-similarity gate, an attribution, and a perceptual warping. Each phenomenon becomes a reading of the same engine under different settings, and a binding failure resolves to a clean branch: a window problem or an agency problem.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses a predictive move (set the window and gate, forecast whether inputs bind and how the percept warps), a diagnostic move (run from a binding failure to which term failed), and an interventionist move (manipulate coherence or the window to break binding or shift agency). A boundary-drawing move keeps these inferences to a perceiver.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the perception-and-agency cluster the transfer is mechanism: multisensory integration, the sense of agency, and visual grouping all run the same window-gate-attribution-warp engine, carried intact into applied perceptual design. Beyond that substrate the word travels much further than the mechanism — coupled oscillators and networks achieve temporal coupling with no attribution step, so those usages are analogy. The bare "events near in time get treated together" residue is properly carried by the parent primes synchronization and causal_inference, not by temporal binding.
