Temporal Distinctiveness¶
Predict an item's recallability not from its absolute age but from how isolated it is among its neighbours in a log-compressed, retrieval-end view of the past, governed by the ratio of the retention interval to the inter-item interval.
Core Idea¶
Temporal distinctiveness is the memory principle that an item's recallability is governed not by its absolute age but by how isolated it is in subjective time relative to its neighbours, assessed from the retrieval moment. As the retention interval grows, prior items compress toward the present in the mind's log-scaled view of its own past, and the items retaining the greatest relative separation are most accessible. The empirical signature is the ratio rule: recency depends on the ratio of retention to inter-item interval, not on either duration absolutely.
Scope of Application¶
Temporal distinctiveness lives across the memory-and-serial-position subfields of psychology and the applied learning that draws on them; its substrate is always a retrieval system viewing its past through a log-compressed perspective.

Clarity¶
Naming temporal distinctiveness pries apart two variables intuition fuses: absolute time since encoding and relative spacing in the retrieval-end view. It dissolves two puzzles at once — the recency buffer becomes unnecessary and long-term recency stops being an anomaly — and it sharpens the boundary against decay, encoding-time contrast, and raw forgetting, treating primacy, recency, and isolation as one phenomenon parameterised by spacing ratios.
Manages Complexity¶
The principle collapses a sprawl of serial-position phenomena — each demanding its own buffer or decay constant under the old account — into one regularity governed by a single dimensionless quantity. The analyst stops tracking absolute ages and tracks two things: the spacing ratio and an item's relative separation. From those, the qualitative outcome for any new arrangement reads off directly, with a clean branch structure.
