Tertian¶
A musical structure organized by stacked or successive major or minor thirds, including chords, harmony, counterpoint, and root motion when thirds are structurally controlling.
Core Idea¶
Tertian describes a musical structure whose organizing intervals are major or minor thirds. A tertian chord is formed by stacking thirds above a root, and tertian harmony makes such third-built chords its principal harmonic material. The label can also qualify passages, counterpoint, root motion, or tuning practices when organization by thirds—not merely the incidental presence of a third—is structurally controlling. The familiar triad is the basic case: two consecutive thirds produce one of four common quality combinations. The recognition rule is contrastive.
Scope of Application¶
Tertian organization operates within music theory and practice wherever major or minor thirds generate or analytically control a chord, passage, scale, progression, or tuning priority. - Triadic chord construction. Stacks of two thirds generate major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads according to the ordered qualities of the component intervals. - Extended tertian sonorities. Adding further thirds above a triad produces larger third-built chords without abandoning the organizing interval. - Inversion and voicing analysis. Reordered chord factors and displayed sixths are normalized to their underlying third relations when testing whether a sonority remains tertian. - Harmonic-language and counterpoint analysis. Pieces or passages qualify when third-built relations organize their chordal or contrapuntal material rather than merely occurring locally.
Clarity¶
Naming a structure tertian distinguishes organization by thirds from the mere occurrence of third intervals. A sonority can contain a third without being generated or most perspicuously analyzed as a stack of thirds; conversely, an inverted chord can remain tertian even when its displayed bass intervals are not successive thirds. That prevents a few incidental thirds from obscuring a predominantly quartal or quintal organization.
Manages Complexity¶
Tertian analysis reduces a large inventory of chord spellings, inversions, extensions, scales, progressions, and tuning choices to the question of whether thirds supply the organizing interval. The analyst need not treat every voicing as a new construction: normalize inverted sixths to their complementary thirds, state the level under inspection—internal chord factors, scale succession, or movement between roots—and track the sequence of major and minor thirds.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The characteristic diagnostic move runs from the notes of a chord or passage to the intervalal construction that best organizes them. Reordering notes by chord factor and inverting displayed sixths to their complementary thirds can reveal a latent stack of major and minor thirds even when the voicing does not present adjacent thirds. For a triad, the ordered pair of third qualities then predicts its major, minor, augmented, or diminished quality.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within music theory, tertian organization transfers literally across chord analysis, harmonic progression, counterpoint, scale construction, composition, and tuning discourse when thirds remain structurally controlling. The same vocabulary and operations carry: reduce inversions to chord-factor relations, distinguish major from minor thirds, identify a stack or succession of thirds, state whether the carrier is a sonority, scale, root motion, or tuning priority, and contrast the result with quartal or quintal organization. Beyond music, the honest reach is (B) shared abstract mechanism with an (A) analogy boundary.

The carrier is a chord, passage, scale, or root progression considered at a declared musical level; its observations are pitches or harmonic roots, and its organizing relation is recurrence of major or minor thirds in a stack or succession.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Tertian sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (64th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
