Theory of narrative thought¶
A proposed cognitive theory that treats causally ordered personal narratives as a basis for anticipation, coherence-seeking, and decisions about threatened standards.
Core Idea¶
Theory of narrative thought (TNT) is a particular proposed account of how people organize experience and choose action. It refines image theory by replacing its underspecified 'image' with narrative: sensed events are arranged into a temporally and causally linked personal history, called the prime narrative, that implies a near future.
According to TNT, abridged derived narratives make that rich history usable in thought, communication, and plans. Coherence of the account influences what new experience is accepted. Decisions arise when an expected future diverges from a standard about how things should be, and a plan narrates a causally plausible path to a less discrepant future. These are claims of the named theory, not a proven universal description of brain activity or every decision.
Scope of Application¶
These comparisons keep TNT's narrative levels and decision proposal attributed to the theory.
- Cognitive-theory comparison. Contrasts TNT's narrative constructs with its image-theory predecessor.
- Decision interpretation. Tests how a proposed discrepancy between expectation and standard motivates a plan.
- Narrative reasoning. Separates ongoing personal chronology from abridged thought and communication.
- Epistemic evaluation. Distinguishes internal coherence claims from independent empirical support.
Clarity¶
Attribute the prime narrative, derived abridgments, coherence pressure, and standards discrepancy to TNT as a proposed theory. Inclusion test: The account links an ongoing causal personal history to shorter narratives and a gap between expected future and valued standard. Exclusion test: An ordinary plotted story, narrative therapy, or a claimed universal neural law is not TNT merely because it uses narrative language. Nearest boundary: Image theory shares future-oriented compatibility but lacks TNT's particular prime-to-derived narrative replacement. The frozen exposition is not independent proof that every decision works this way.
Manages Complexity¶
TNT compresses many sensations and events into a causal personal chronology, then into shorter derived narratives that support communication and planning. That compression has explanatory value but can conceal counterevidence when coherence becomes a reason to resist revision, a tension the theory itself describes.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Identify whether the claim is TNT's proposed mechanism or an empirical observation.
- Trace events into the putative prime narrative and its near-future implication.
- Separate an abridged derived narrative from the full continuing account.
- Identify which expected outcome conflicts with which standard.
- Check whether the proposed plan is causally coherent and whether contrary evidence is being excluded.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The prime/derived-narrative distinction may guide interpretation of human decision accounts when a person's event history, expectations, and standards are actually specified. It does not transfer literally to any plotted story, nor prove that nonhuman systems or all neural processes implement TNT's proposed mechanism.
