Third-Person Effect¶
Explain censorship and content-regulation demand by the gap between how strongly people think a media message affects others versus themselves, since it is that perceived self-other asymmetry, not the message's real influence, that drives the demand — and its sign flips with the message's valence.
Core Idea¶
The third-person effect, named by Davison (1983), is the finding that people perceive media messages as influencing others more than themselves, and that this perceived asymmetry, not the message's actual influence, drives their support for censorship and regulation. It has two components: the perceptual self-other gap, surveyable across message types, and the behavioural consequence that regulation demand tracks the attributed effect on others. The mechanism is valence-conditioned, reversing to first-person for beneficial or identity-affirming content.

Clarity¶
Naming the third-person effect makes visible a distinction survey work collapsed: perceived effects on others are a separate, causally productive quantity from measured effects. Treating the self-other gap as a real variable makes censorship disputes legible as tracking attributed-susceptibility-of-others, explaining why a message that changes no vote still draws restriction demand. Its valence-conditioning sharpens what would be mistaken for flat optimism bias into a motivated, framing-governed asymmetry.
Manages Complexity¶
Media-effects research otherwise re-explains every regulation dispute from scratch, message type by message type. The construct compresses that class by relocating the driving quantity to a single surveyable variable — the self-other gap — off which regulation demand reads directly. A second parameter, message valence, makes the reading predictive: classifying perceived desirability and social distance forecasts the gap's direction and rough strength before any survey runs.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The effect licenses a diagnostic move that separates perceived from measured effect and infers regulation demand from the gap, plus an audit diagnostic distinguishing persuasion-driven endorsement from "others need it." An interventionist move predicts that targeting actual persuasion misses the driver while changing perceived effect moves it, and a boundary-drawing move keys the effect's direction to valence and social distance and confines its behavioural force to settings with a live regulation option.
