Core Idea

The system originated in European museum ordering and applies unevenly across regions: ages overlap, some societies bypass stages and material predominance does not define all social change.[1] Assemblages are classified by characteristic tool materials and production traditions, stratigraphic sequences order them and regional chronologies calibrate the transitions.
