Threshold population¶
The minimum market population needed to support a particular good or service at a location under assumptions about demand, price, costs and travel behavior.
Core Idea¶
Threshold population is the smallest customer base whose expected demand makes provision of a good or service economically viable. Aggregate demand rises with population and purchase frequency; provision begins when expected revenue or social-use value crosses fixed and variable cost. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of economic geography. It is demand-side minimum scale in central-place location theory.
