Thurstone scale¶
An equal-appearing-interval attitude scale built by having judges locate statement favorability and selecting items with separated medians and low ambiguity.
Core Idea¶
Thurstone scaling calibrates attitude statements from judge distributions, then scores respondents from endorsed item scale values under declared aggregation rules. Judges sort statements across ordered categories, medians estimate scale location, interquartile spread filters ambiguity, and selected items span the construct continuum. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of psychometrics. It is the domain-specific identity determined by construct, statement pool, judge population, category anchors, location and dispersion estimators, item-selection rule, respondent instruction, score aggregation, and validation are explicit.
