The perceptual quality that distinguishes two sounds sharing the same pitch, loudness, and duration — the correlate of a sound's spectral and temporal envelope, varying orthogonally to the other acoustic dimensions.

Formally it is the perceptual correlate of a sound's spectral profile (overtone series and relative partial amplitudes) and temporal envelope (attack, sustain, decay). Its structural commitment is orthogonality: timbre varies independently of the other acoustic dimensions.
Scope of Application¶
Timbre lives across the acoustic-substrate subfields wherever a sound source has a spectral signature to read and a pitch content to hold fixed.

Clarity¶
Naming timbre makes visible a distinction that would otherwise dissolve into "the way it sounds": two events identical in pitch, loudness, and duration yet unmistakably different. Its decisive move is to assert orthogonality — that this quality is a separable dimension — letting an orchestrator reassign a line or blend instruments without disturbing harmonic content, and fixing measurable correlates for what was once a primitive "tone quality."
Manages Complexity¶
A sound's full acoustic description — energy across dozens of time-varying partials plus a shaped onset and decay — is a high-dimensional object no one could track waveform-point by point. Timbre collapses it by factoring: it asserts orthogonality to pitch, loudness, and duration, then replaces scalar "richness" with a short vector of coordinates on the brightness, attack, and roughness axes that the analyst can read independently.
