Titular nation¶
An ethnic nation whose name supplies the title of a state or territorial autonomy and is institutionally associated with it.
Core Idea¶
A titular nation is linked symbolically or constitutionally to a named territorial unit, whether or not it is locally majority, politically dominant, or the only recognized community. Naming, language policy, federal design, historical homeland claims, and elite institutions connect one ethnonational category to the territory’s official title. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
