Tone letter¶
A grapheme or transcription symbol that encodes a language's lexical or grammatical tone level or contour.

Tone letters include orthographic alphabetic markers and iconic Chao staff symbols; interpretation depends on whether values are absolute phonetic targets or relative categories within a speaker's range. A tone category is mapped to a letter or ordered sequence of pitch-height marks, and readers reconstruct level, rising, falling, peaking or dipping contours under the notation's scale convention.
