Tongan music notation¶

Tongan music notation, commonly called Tuʻungafasi or Moulton notation, is a conventional numerical system developed in nineteenth-century Tonga for teaching and writing pitched choral music. Numerals derived from Tongan number names represent scale positions; modified digits represent chromatic pitches, marks above or below indicate octave placement, and surrounding symbols encode rhythm, duration, meter, and part structure. Its identity is the compositional code and its community use, not the fact that it uses numbers.
A key or tonal frame anchors numeral-to-pitch interpretation. Readers decode successive symbols into pitch classes, octave registers, durations, and simultaneous voice lines. Because the system was adapted to Tongan phonology and choral pedagogy, oral syllable names and blackboard or manuscript practice reinforce the signs.
