Traditional grammar¶
A language-description framework inherited from classical Greek and Latin grammar that organizes words into parts of speech, inflectional paradigms and prescriptive syntactic rules.
Core Idea¶
Traditional grammars vary by language, educational tradition and period and may be descriptive or prescriptive, but share category-based analysis modeled on classical philology rather than one modern explanatory formalism. Words are assigned to conventional classes, their forms are arranged into declensions or conjugations and sentences are parsed through rule-governed combinations and named functions. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
