Traffic Light Rating System¶
An evaluative status convention that assigns a target to ordered red, amber, or green anchors on a named dimension for quick interpretation.
Core Idea¶
A traffic light rating system gives a target an ordered red, amber, or green status on a named question, then displays that judgment for someone to use.[ref-73bd203628d2][ref-327f820854db] A person or system assigns the grade; the color is the short result of an assessment.[ref-73bd203628d2][ref-327f820854db] In the UK, food packages show a separate color for fat, saturates, sugars, and salt.[^ref-73bd203628d2] Government project reviews instead grade confidence in delivery using evidence and professional judgment.[^ref-327f820854db] That guide allows grades between green, amber, and red and says the result is not calculated from a simple formula.[^ref-327f820854db]
Scope of Application¶
The same roles appear in unlike settings:
-
Food labeling: published criteria assign each nutrient a color.[^ref-73bd203628d2] Amounts and reference-intake figures remain visible.[^ref-73bd203628d2]
-
Project assurance: a review team grades delivery confidence against time, cost, quality, and benefits.[^ref-327f820854db] The grade informs oversight.[^ref-327f820854db]
-
School noise: a sound-measuring device uses configurable thresholds to show red, yellow, or green.[^ref-e8899f010f7a] This does not verify every cafeteria discipline claim.
Aberdeen's BRAG workplan uses blue for completed, closed, or not-started work.[^ref-d2405c2cb10b] Blue is a lifecycle status there, not a universal fourth risk level.[^ref-d2405c2cb10b]
Clarity¶
Before reading a color, ask: What and which dimension are rated? Who assigns the status? What does this scale mean? What should the reader do?
A red salt panel rates one nutrient, not a whole food; UK guidance says red does not prohibit eating it.[^ref-73bd203628d2]
Similar lamps need not be ratings. One maker uses green for running or paused, red for stopped or faulted, and amber for manual mode.[^ref-69cd289eacad] Those are operating modes, not ordered evaluative grades. A different factory system might rate performance; check its criteria.
Manages Complexity¶
The colors let a reader notice an assessment quickly without reconstructing every input. That compression can also hide distinctions. The UK food label keeps nutrient amounts beside the colors, while the project guide bases its concise grade on a fuller review and permits intermediate categories.[ref-73bd203628d2][ref-327f820854db] Those supporting details help interpretation, but a rating can exist even when the whole evidential record is not displayed.
Abstract Reasoning¶
If two foods both show red, check which nutrient each panel rates before comparing them. If a project moves from amber to amber-red, inspect the project guide's grade definitions and review evidence; do not assume a numerical threshold was crossed. The guide explicitly treats delivery confidence as a holistic judgment rather than a calculation.[^ref-327f820854db]
Removing the named dimension or the act of assigning a grade breaks the rating relation. Removing a universal two-cutpoint formula does not: the food and project cases use different methods.[ref-73bd203628d2][ref-327f820854db]
Knowledge Transfer¶
Across food labeling and project assurance, the transferable questions are target, dimension, assigner, ordered anchors, and reader use. The food criteria cannot be transferred to projects, and a project's red grade cannot be treated as a food warning.[ref-73bd203628d2][ref-327f820854db] Evaluative Rating names the broader ordered judgment; this traffic-light convention adds red, amber, and green presentation. A machine status lamp shows why a familiar palette alone does not prove the full rating structure.[^ref-69cd289eacad]

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Traffic Light Rating System sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (95th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
