Trailokya

A source-indexed Indian religious schema that organizes a declared cosmological range into exactly three named worlds or realms, while leaving their membership, ordering, transitions, and transcendent boundary to the governing Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain tradition.

Core Idea

Trailokya (Sanskrit trailokya, also triloka) literally means “three worlds.” In Indian religious literature it names a family of cosmological schemas in which a tradition-declared range of existence is organized into exactly three worlds, spheres, planes, or realms. The term may also function metonymically for “the whole inhabited or conditioned cosmos” when a deity, event, teaching, or action is said to extend across all three worlds.[1][2]

The abstraction is source-indexed. It does not assert that Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions share one map whose labels can be translated position by position. A Hindu vertical triad such as earth, midspace, and heaven; the Buddhist realms of desire, form, and formlessness; and the Jain lower, middle, and upper worlds all instantiate threefold cosmological organization, but they divide by different axes, populate the divisions differently, and relate them differently to rebirth and liberation.[3][4][5] Treating “upper” as an exact equivalent of “formless,” or “earth” as an exact equivalent of “desire,” would be a category error.

The stable identity is therefore:

declared religious-cosmological scope -> exactly three named domains -> source-governed placement of beings, states, regions, or destinations -> source-governed ordering or transition relations -> an explicit boundary for what the triad includes and excludes.

This package does real analytical work. It lets a reader determine which threefold scheme a text presupposes, reconstruct who or what belongs where, distinguish physical verticality from experiential or soteriological gradation, and prevent apparent parallels from becoming false equivalences. The fixed count is stable; the contents are not. That combination makes Trailokya an autonomous domain-specific abstraction rather than a synonym for cosmology, a universal three-level prime, or a loose list of religious places.

Structural Signature

Let a particular text, school, diagram, ritual, or scholarly reconstruction be the variant context \(V\). A complete Trailokya model can be written as

where \(C_V\) is the cosmological range the source claims to organize; \(W_1,W_2,W_3\) are exactly three named worlds or realms; \(M_V\) assigns beings, locations, states, or rebirth destinations to those domains; \(R_V\) records their order and permitted transitions; \(O_V\) records what lies outside, beyond, above, or orthogonal to the three; and \(U_V\) records the source's use of the schema.

The mandatory roles are:

  • Variant authority. A named text, tradition, school, historical stratum, or documented practice controls the meanings. “Indian religion says” is too broad.
  • Declared range. The analyst identifies what the triad covers: spatial cosmos, conditioned rebirth, embodied world-space, ritual universe, or another source-defined total.
  • Fixed three-count. There are exactly three primary domains at the analyzed level. Each may contain many sublevels without breaking the triad.
  • Named domains. The three members are recoverable in the source's vocabulary or an accountable translation.
  • Differentiating axis. The source distinguishes the members by location, materiality, desire, embodiment, karmic destination, temporal interpretation, or another stated criterion.
  • Placement relation. Beings, states, regions, practices, or events can be located in or related to the domains.
  • Order or topology. The source may impose above/middle/below, coarse/subtle, desire/form/formless, or another relation. Mere list order must not be upgraded to spiritual superiority without evidence.
  • Transition rules. Rebirth, ascent, descent, divine traversal, meditation, karmic movement, or rhetorical scope may connect the worlds. A scheme can also state that ordinary movement between them is impossible.
  • Outside ledger. Liberation, nirvāṇa, buddhafields, non-world space, a liberated-soul region, or other realities may be placed beyond the triad. Their status is not inferable from the number three.
  • Use. The triad classifies, locates, narrates, diagrams, totalizes, or frames soteriological reasoning within the tradition.

Locked invariant: a case qualifies when a source-indexed cosmological range is organized through a primary three-domain ledger that supports at least placement and one further relation such as order, transition, traversal, or total-scope reference. The worlds need not be physically measurable, and description does not affirm their metaphysical truth. A word occurrence with no recoverable triad remains lexicographic evidence, not a fully reconstructed model.

Identity-breaking changes: merging the traditions into one master map; dropping the fixed count; substituting any religious triad; treating every internal subrealm as a fourth primary world; making a transcendent goal another rebirth realm without source support; or importing modern astronomical, psychological, or New Age correspondences as though inherited.

What It Is Not

Trailokya is not Indian cosmology as a whole. Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cosmologies contain many additional worlds, heavens, hells, continents, aeons, beings, causal accounts, and ritual or soteriological systems. The node isolates one recurring threefold organizing level.

It is not one pan-Indian doctrine with a universal membership list. The Pali Text Society dictionary explicitly warns that loka is not a fixed and definite term and documents multiple Buddhist divisions, including desire, form, and formless realms as well as other threefold schemes.[3] Hindu sources likewise use triloka or trailokya under different vertical and textual conventions. The safe comparative claim is recurrence of a three-world form, not sameness of its contents.

It is not merely the number three, a physical three-storey universe, or a hierarchy in every case. Some realizations are vertically diagrammed; some distinguish modes of conditioned existence; some use “the three worlds” as a conventional totality expression. A top position is not automatically morally best. In Jain cosmology, for example, human birth in the middle world has unique soteriological importance even though gods inhabit upper regions.[5]

It is not prime:sacred. Sacred classifies objects or commitments as set apart and protected. Trailokya supplies three named cosmological domains, a membership scheme, relations among them, and a tradition-specific outside boundary. A world can be sacred, profane, pleasurable, painful, or neither without changing the three-slot identity.

It is not Sefirot. Sefirot is a Kabbalistic ten-role emanational and correspondence system governed by a divine-unity constraint. The shared religious, ordered, and representational language does not bridge the fixed counts, roles, textual traditions, or operations.

Scope of Application

Hindu texts and practices. Triloka and trailokya can name the three worlds as a total cosmic range. Monier-Williams glosses trailokya as the three worlds and gives the familiar heaven, earth, and lower-region sense; modern Sanskrit philosophical reference works likewise record triloka as “the three worlds.”[1][2] Individual sources may use earth–midspace–heaven, earth–heaven–netherworld, or other inherited arrangements. Narratives of Viṣṇu as Trivikrama or Vāmana use cosmic strides to express traversal or dominion over the worlds, while compounds and epithets can invoke all-world scope without restating a complete map. The exact triad must be recovered locally.

Buddhist cosmology and philosophy. A major realization is the three realms or elements—desire (kāmadhātu), form (rūpadhātu), and formlessness (ārūpyadhātu)—which classify conditioned modes and destinations of rebirth. The form and formless realms are connected to meditative attainments in Buddhist scholastic accounts. The Stanford Encyclopedia's Vasubandhu entry describes the three realms as the states into which living beings may be reborn and as the universe for ordinary beings in the context of Yogācāra argument.[6] A source must still distinguish this triad from the six destinies, thirty-one planes, three worlds of sentient beings/formations/location, or other Buddhist taxonomies.[3]

Jain cosmology. World-space is organized into lower, middle, and upper worlds. Nalini Balbir's JAINpedia account connects these domains to karma, rebirth, types of beings, the unique human and liberative importance of the middle world, and the well-known cosmic-man representation. The liberated-soul region at the summit and non-world space require separate boundary treatment; they are not casually inserted as fourth and fifth primary worlds.[5]

Comparative religious studies. The abstraction provides a controlled comparison template: freeze the source, list the three domains, state the axis, inventory inhabitants, specify transitions, and mark the outside. Comparison can then identify formal recurrence without claiming doctrinal identity or common historical origin.

Textual interpretation, art, and ritual studies. Epithets, narratives, mandalas, diagrams, temple imagery, cosmographs, and ritual formulas can presuppose three-world structure. A researcher can use the node to ask which members are explicit, which are inherited, and whether an image depicts the full triad or only one domain. The scope remains descriptive: documenting a religious cosmology neither validates nor refutes it.

Clarity

The decisive question is not “Does this mention three?” but “Which cosmological total is being divided, along what axis, by whose convention?” That question prevents most conflations.

For each use, fill six fields: source or school; three member names; translation; differentiating axis; inhabitants or states; and outside boundary. If the fields cannot be filled, the phrase may be an all-world epithet or an incomplete reference, but it should not support detailed cosmological inference.

Three distinctions are especially clarifying.

First, world is polysemous. It can mean a region, plane, class of existence, experiential sphere, population, or cosmological category. The Pali dictionary's range from “space or sphere of creation” to “plane, division, order” shows why translating every loka as a modern planet is misleading.[3]

Second, verticality and soteriology are different axes. Lower, middle, and upper may be spatial; desire, form, and formlessness classify modes of conditioned existence. A diagram can place a realm above another without making every inhabitant spiritually closer to liberation.

Third, beyond the triad need not mean a fourth member. Nirvāṇa is not simply another rebirth destination alongside desire, form, and formlessness. Jain liberated souls at the summit are no longer transmigrating inhabitants of an additional ordinary world. The outside ledger preserves such claims without forcing them into the primary count.

Manages Complexity

Religious cosmologies can contain many heavens, hells, continents, beings, meditative states, temporal cycles, and routes of rebirth. Trailokya compresses this multiplicity at one declared analytical resolution. Thirty-one Buddhist planes, numerous Jain heavens and hells, or many Hindu lokas can be grouped under three primary domains without erasing their internal levels. The triad becomes a table of contents for a much larger cosmography.

The compression also supports textual reference. “Lord of the three worlds” can signal cosmic scope more economically than enumerating every region. A diagram of lower, middle, and upper worlds can coordinate many local details through one vertical frame. A Buddhist three-realm classification can connect a being's rebirth destination, material condition, and meditative correlate without listing the entire cosmos on every occasion.

The cost of compression is false homology. Equal position numbers invite analysts to equate unlike contents: first with first, highest with highest, or earthly with desire-bound. The variant ledger controls this cost by requiring each mapping to carry its own axis and source. It permits comparison of relations—threefold coverage, internal subdivision, transition, transcendence—while blocking unsupported equivalence of members.

Abstract Reasoning

The tuple \(T_V\) licenses several bounded deductions.

Coverage reasoning. If a source explicitly treats \(W_1,W_2,W_3\) as exhaustive for \(C_V\), then a case inside that declared range must be routed to one domain. If a being seems to fit none, either the membership rule is misunderstood, the source admits an outside category, or the alleged partition is incomplete. Exhaustivity is source-relative: the Buddhist realms can exhaust conditioned rebirth without exhausting every claim about nirvāṇa.

Refinement reasoning. A three-world scheme can coexist with many sublevels. Replacing \(W_2\) with its internal heavens, continents, or states is a refinement, not evidence that the three-count was false. Conversely, collapsing a detailed cosmography to three blocks loses information; conclusions licensed at the sublevel may not survive the quotient.

Transition reasoning. A route from one world to another must be supported by \(R_V\). Karma and rebirth, meditation-linked attainments, divine strides, ascent narratives, and diagrammatic adjacency are different relations. No generic “level up” operation follows from the triad alone.

Non-equivalence reasoning. Given variants \(T_A\) and \(T_B\), a crosswalk between worlds is valid only if it preserves the relevant axis, membership, and relations. Equal count or similar vertical drawings establish structural analogy, not doctrinal identity. A failed crosswalk is informative: it reveals that one scheme partitions by materiality while another partitions by cosmic location.

Boundary reasoning. If a source describes liberation as beyond the three, one may infer that the triad's carrier is conditioned or transmigratory existence rather than reality without remainder. One may not infer that every tradition makes the same exclusion.

Knowledge Transfer

Within Hindu studies, the method transfers across texts by preserving the analytical procedure rather than one list: identify the compound, recover the three members, locate the narrative or ritual operation, and distinguish inherited cosmography from rhetorical “all worlds” scope. A Trivikrama narrative and a deity epithet can invoke the same totalizing vocabulary while using it differently.

Within Buddhist studies, it transfers across Abhidharma, Yogācāra, cosmological diagrams, and meditation discussions when desire/form/formless membership and the relation to conditioned rebirth remain explicit. It must not absorb every Buddhist triad. Three bodies of a Buddha, three jewels, three poisons, and three marks solve different classificatory problems.

Within Jain studies, it transfers among textual cosmography, cosmic-man images, manuscript diagrams, accounts of rebirth, and explanations of the middle world's importance. The lower/middle/upper topology and karmic movement remain stable enough for comparison, while Śvetāmbara and Digambara details, numbers, and visual conventions require a variant ledger.[5]

Across traditions, use a structure-only crosswalk:

  1. name each source and historical layer;
  2. record its declared cosmological range;
  3. transcribe all three member names before translating;
  4. state the differentiating axis;
  5. record inhabitants, states, or regions;
  6. record ordering and transitions;
  7. record what lies outside or beyond;
  8. compare only relations that survive these checks.

Transfer beyond Indian religious studies is analogical. A three-tier organization chart or software stack may resemble Trailokya, but it is not literally Trailokya. Its portable residue—three-block partition, representation, and hierarchy—is already covered by primes.

Examples

Buddhist desire, form, and formless realms. Set \(V\) to a Buddhist scholastic context using kāmadhātu, rūpadhātu, and ārūpyadhātu. The declared range is conditioned realms of rebirth; the axis combines sensual desire and material form; inhabitants and rebirth states map into the three; and meditative attainment is related to higher form or formless states. Vasubandhu can invoke “everything in the three realms” as a comprehensive field for ordinary beings in an argument about appearance-only.[6] Nirvāṇa is not added as a fourth rebirth realm. Mapped back: fixed count = three; members = desire/form/formless; placement = rebirth state; relation = conditioned gradation and meditative correlate; outside = liberation under the relevant account.

Jain lower, middle, and upper worlds. Set \(V\) to the Jain cosmological system described by Balbir. World-space contains lower, middle, and upper worlds. Souls move through births according to karma; hellish regions are below, humans and many other embodied beings occupy the middle, and heavens occupy upper regions. The middle world is soteriologically crucial because human birth and the path to liberation are available there; simply calling the upper world “best” would therefore be wrong.[5] Cosmic-man images map the lower world to the lower body, the middle to the waist, and the upper to the torso, with the liberated-soul region shown at the summit. Mapped back: axis = cosmic vertical location; transition = karmic rebirth; representation = cosmic man; outside ledger = liberated state and non-world space.

Hindu vertical triad. Set \(V\) to a source using earth, atmosphere or midspace, and heaven, or the related heaven–earth–lower-region convention. The domains form a vertical cosmic total, and divine traversal or dominion can be expressed as spanning all three. In Vāmana/Trivikrama narration, three strides function as a cosmic-scale operation rather than a census of three modern astronomical bodies. Mapped back: fixed count = three; axis = vertical cosmic region; use = narrative totalization and divine scope; variant control = do not substitute desire/form/formless or Jain lower/middle/upper merely because a translation says “three worlds.”

Rhetorical but incomplete occurrence. A hymn calls a deity “lord of Trailokya” but does not enumerate the worlds. The occurrence supports the total-scope function and lexical identity. It does not by itself license a precise member list; that requires the hymn's commentary, textual setting, or inherited convention. Mapped back: use is known; \(M_V\) and perhaps \(R_V\) remain underdetermined.

Failed crosswalk. An analyst aligns Hindu earth with Buddhist desire realm and Jain middle world because all include humans. The mapping fails: the Buddhist desire realm also includes hells and many heavens; the Jain middle world is a spatial cosmographic region; and Hindu “earth” belongs to a different vertical scheme. Shared occupants do not establish equivalent blocks.

Structural Tensions

  • Stable count vs. unstable contents. Three is conserved while member definitions vary. Diagnostic: preserve the source and axis next to every member list.
  • Compression vs. internal multiplicity. Three worlds can contain many heavens, hells, planes, or continents. Diagnostic: declare the analytical level and treat sublevels as refinements.
  • Totality language vs. bounded carrier. “All three worlds” sounds absolutely exhaustive, yet a tradition may place liberation or non-world space beyond them. Diagnostic: state exactly what \(C_V\) covers.
  • Vertical image vs. spiritual value. Higher position tempts readers to infer moral superiority. Diagnostic: separate spatial order, pleasure, karmic status, and liberative capacity.
  • Comparison vs. false equivalence. Recurring form enables comparison but matching slot numbers can erase doctrinal differences. Diagnostic: require axis, membership, and transition preservation before mapping members.
  • Translation vs. polysemy. Loka, dhātu, realm, plane, sphere, and world overlap imperfectly. Diagnostic: retain original terms and state the chosen translation's limits.
  • Participant cosmology vs. scholarly description. Traditions present the worlds within truth and practice commitments; scholarship brackets metaphysical endorsement. Diagnostic: attribute claims and distinguish internal from analytical voice.
  • Inherited schema vs. synthetic harmonization. Modern diagrams may combine lists from different texts. Diagnostic: cite the source of each domain, inhabitant, and transition rather than trusting visual completeness.
  • Exact triad vs. rhetorical totalization. An epithet can invoke cosmic scope without restating the map. Diagnostic: do not infer missing members from the word alone.

Structural–Framed Character

Trailokya is framed, with aggregate framed score $0.79$. The abstraction has a structural nucleus: exactly three primary domains organize a declared range, and an analyst can formalize their membership, order, refinement, transition, and outside boundary. Once a tradition's scheme is fixed, contradictions such as inserting a fourth primary realm or equating disjoint categories can be diagnosed.

Literal recognition, however, is constituted by inherited religious frames. The domain names, authoritative texts, cosmological ranges, inhabitants, rebirth rules, liberation boundaries, visual conventions, and acceptable interpretations are not derivable from “three” or from physical observation. They are preserved, debated, and transformed by Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and scholarly communities.

The high framed score also reflects vocabulary. Trailokya, triloka, loka, dhātu, and their translations carry textual histories. Importing the term into a secular three-tier system produces metaphor, not another literal instance. The boundary is nevertheless real rather than arbitrary: source-indexing, fixed count, cosmological scope, and placement relations provide a repeatable recognition test.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

Skeletal core. A declared total is compressed into exactly three primary blocks; cases are assigned to blocks; blocks may be ordered and internally refined; transitions and an outside boundary regulate inference; the whole triad can stand metonymically for the covered total.

Domain accent. The total is religious-cosmological; the blocks are worlds, realms, planes, or spheres; inhabitants include humans, animals, gods, hell beings, and other tradition-specific beings or states; movement involves karma, rebirth, meditation, divine traversal, liberation, or ritual and textual representation; and authority comes from inherited texts and schools.

Why not a prime. The skeletal core is already available as Partition, Representation, and sometimes Hierarchy. Trailokya does not recur literally in law, computing, biology, or ordinary organizational design. Removing the Indian religious terms and source-governed cosmology leaves a generic three-part classification. The autonomous residual is therefore substantial but domain-bound.

Trailokya strictly instantiates prime:partition when the source's declared cosmological range is treated as exhaustively divided at the primary level into three mutually distinguishable domains. The child supplies the fixed cardinality, religious-cosmological carrier, member names, internal refinements, transition relations, and outside ledger. A single subsumption / specializes / strict edge is the minimal proposal.

This parent is applied at the declared scope, not to all reality. The Buddhist three realms can partition conditioned rebirth while nirvāṇa lies outside the carrier. A Jain map can partition the three inhabited/transmigratory worlds while separately representing liberated souls and non-world space. Scope qualification protects Partition's exhaustiveness invariant.

Trailokya is related to prime:representation because texts, compounds, and diagrams encode cosmology in a compact three-slot medium. Representation is not a second parent: some uses assert an ontology rather than foregrounding a medium, and Partition captures the more literal conserved operation.

It is related to prime:hierarchy where the domains are vertically or soteriologically ordered, but hierarchy is not universal enough for a direct edge. It is related to prime:ontology because the triad can classify modes or regions of being, and to prime:sacred through religious context, but neither supplies the fixed three-world partition.
