Uberfic¶
A fan-fiction genre that relocates recognizable character patterns into another era, setting or reality through counterpart characters.
Core Idea¶
The genre originated in Xena fandom, and its counterpart figures may be ancestors, descendants, reincarnations or noncanonical analogues rather than the canonical characters themselves. A source character relationship and trait pattern is abstracted from canon, re-instantiated in a remote setting and signaled strongly enough for readers to recognize the correspondence. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Uberfic belongs to fan studies and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed fan studies carrier, including its objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, and comparison cases, then evaluate the fandom and canon, source characters, counterpart characters, transformed setting and time, preserved traits or relationship, naming convention, degree of canon continuity and genre-label evidence are explicit.
