Ultimatum Game¶
A two-player, one-shot bargaining test in which a proposer splits a fixed stake and a responder may accept or reject for nothing, isolating costly punishment of unfairness by pitting the selfish equilibrium against the offers and rejections people actually make.

The ultimatum game is a two-player, one-shot bargaining paradigm in which a proposer divides a fixed stake and a responder must accept the split or reject it, leaving both with nothing. The selfish subgame-perfect equilibrium predicts a minimal offer accepted; the data show proposers offering 40-50 percent and responders rejecting offers below roughly a fifth at real cost. The game isolates costly punishment of perceived unfairness, formalized by Fehr and Schmidt's inequity-aversion model.

Clarity¶
The paradigm turns a diffuse dispute — do people behave as the self-interested model says? — into a single falsifiable test where the two accounts make contradictory predictions about one observable. The gap between "accept anything positive" and observed rejection is the result the game was built to produce. It separates the proposer's strategic anticipation from the responder's costly punishment, and reframes the anomaly as a question about the utility function rather than a failure of reason.
Manages Complexity¶
Fairness is otherwise a sprawling object laden with context. The game compresses the entire question to four moving parts — a fixed stake, an offer, a binary accept/reject, and one-shot anonymity. Behavioural game theory then tracks a small set of quantities: offer fraction, rejection threshold, and punishment cost. The verdict reads off directly, and the tangled explanation space resolves into tunable parameters — a one-parameter inequity-aversion term, and a threshold calibrated by social structure.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The game licenses a diagnostic move (falsify the selfish model and measure a population's departure from rejection behavior), an interventionist move (localize where social preferences bite by parametrically varying the game, as in the dictator variant), boundary-drawing (taste versus irrationality; fixed parameter versus culturally calibrated threshold), and predictive reasoning (forecast fairness behavior from social structure, and offers from anticipated rejection).

The ultimatum game is an experimental instrument with two transfer channels. The instrument itself transfers literally wherever a valuing human agent can be tested — across labs, small-scale societies, and its sibling paradigms. Its findings, however, travel not as the paradigm but as the structural content they measure: the durable lesson (humans pay to punish inequitable allocations, so allocators offer near-equal splits) reaches wage negotiations and treaties as the parent primes fairness, reciprocity, and costly punishment — the game supplies evidence for them, not the patterns themselves.
