Articulate, in a structured object with named slots, what benefit an offering delivers for a specific customer segment under a specific constraint and why it beats named alternatives — a targeted, contrastive, capability-honest statement that serves as the shared referent for aligning product, pricing, marketing, and sales.

Core Idea

A value proposition is a business-strategy construct that articulates, for a specific target segment under a specific constraint, what benefit an offering delivers and why that benefit beats available alternatives. Its canonical structure (Lanning-Michaels 1988; Osterwalder's Canvas; Christensen's jobs-to-be-done) is: for this segment, who face this need, our offering delivers this benefit, which alternatives do not. It is targeted, contrastive, constraint-aware, and specific — a structured articulation of offering-customer fit, not a generic quality claim.

Scope of Application

The value proposition lives across the business-strategy and marketing subfields where a real offering is positioned against real alternatives for a real segment.

Clarity

Naming the value proposition converts a vague aspiration — "we have a good product" — into a structured object with named slots, and filling them is where clarity comes from. A generic claim never has to say for whom, under what constraint, or better than what, so a team can mistake a compliment for a strategy. Each slot does distinct work: targeting decides relevance, the benefit decides substance, and the contrastive frame decides whether the claim differentiates at all. Its subtler role is as a unit of strategic alignment — a shared referent for product, pricing, marketing, and sales.

Manages Complexity

The open question "why will anyone buy this?" ranges over every customer, benefit, and competitor, drifting into self-compliment. The construct compresses it into a small fixed set of named slots — segment, constraint, benefit, named alternative, actual capability — so articulating positioning reduces to filling four or five slots, each collapsing one dimension to a tracked parameter. Its second compression is organizational: a sprawl of decisions across four functions, each against its own private picture of the customer, collapses to coherence-testing against one shared referent that makes divergence visible.

Abstract Reasoning

The construct licenses a diagnostic move reading a generic claim as a non-proposition by checking which slots are unfilled, a differentiation test binding a benefit to the named alternative (including the do-nothing option) to expose non-differentiators, an honesty-and-alignment diagnostic binding the claim to actual capability and reading cross-function divergence off the shared referent, and an interventionist move filling the slots to force the strategic questions — while scoping the construct apart from the broader operations it composes.

Knowledge Transfer
