Verification bias¶
Bias arising when receipt of a definitive reference assessment depends on the result of the preliminary test being evaluated.
Core Idea¶
Partial and differential verification have different mechanisms, and correction requires assumptions about missing reference outcomes; the concept applies to study validity rather than individual diagnosis. Test-positive or otherwise selected participants disproportionately receive the reference standard, so sensitivity and specificity are estimated from a nonrandom verified subset and can be systematically distorted. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
