Virtual body¶
A digitally mediated embodiment through which a person is represented, perceived and able to act in a virtual environment.
Core Idea¶
Virtual-body theories distinguish avatar representation, sensorimotor presence, disembodiment discourse and the continuing material body; identity, agency and social recognition need not coincide across them. Interfaces map bodily input and identity cues into a persistent or transient digital form, while feedback and other users’ responses produce an experienced locus of action and appearance. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
