Vocabulary¶
The set of lexical units available in a language, domain, text or individual's receptive and productive repertoire, including conventional meanings and use conditions rather than a bare word list.
Core Idea¶
A vocabulary is a bounded repertoire of words or lexical signs associated with a language, field, corpus or language user. Exposure, instruction, social use and lexical innovation add or revise form-meaning associations, while retrieval and recognition distinguish active from passive knowledge. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of linguistics. It is bounded lexical repertoire and its receptive, productive, domain and frequency structure.
