Weak ontology, in Stephen K. White's political-theory usage, is a postfoundational stance that acknowledges indispensable ontological commitments while treating them as contestable, historically formed, and unavailable as certain final grounds. The theorist surfaces background assumptions, affirms them provisionally, traces the sensibility and ethos they support, and keeps both commitments and consequences exposed to encounter, criticism, and revision.
Its autonomous residual is the explicit combination of ontological affirmation, historical contingency, and continued contestability in political reflection, rather than ontology in general or generic intellectual modesty. The identity fails when all ontological claims are denied, a commitment is treated as universally demonstrated and unrevisable, or weak is taken to mean politically ineffective, logically vague, or content-free.
