Wertkritik¶
A school of Marxian critical theory that treats the commodity value form, abstract labor and capital's social totality—not merely class distribution—as the central objects of critique.
Core Idea¶
German value criticism distinguishes Marx's esoteric categorical critique from traditional labor-centered Marxism and includes debates over crisis theory, dissociation, subjectivity and the relation of value to gender. Analysis reconstructs how commodity exchange, abstract labor and money impose impersonal social mediation, then interprets crises and institutions as contradictions of that historically specific form. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
