Word guessing¶
A context-based reading strategy in which an unfamiliar written word is provisionally inferred from sentence, picture, or discourse cues and the guess is checked against subsequent meaning or print.
Core Idea¶
Word guessing can support hypothesis formation and semantic integration but is unreliable as a substitute for decoding; instructional claims depend on orthography, reader level, cue use, verification, and evidence comparing phonics and contextual approaches. The reader encounters an unidentified word, generates a candidate from semantic and visual context, continues reading to test coherence, and ideally returns to letter-sound or lexical evidence to confirm or revise it. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
