Work systems¶
A sociotechnical system in which people and machines perform processes with information and technology to produce products or services for customers.
Core Idea¶
A work system is not limited to an IT system or formal workflow, its boundary must include participants and customers, and the Work System Framework is an analytical lens rather than a claim that every organizational activity is one homogeneous system. Participants use information, technologies and other resources through activities and processes within an environment and infrastructure, producing offerings whose performance feeds adaptation and redesign. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Work systems belongs to information systems and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed information systems carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundaries, and comparison targets, then evaluate the system boundary and purpose, customers, products or services, work practices and activities, human participants, information, technologies, shared infrastructure, surrounding environment and strategy, performance measures, risks and feedback-driven change over time are explicit. Clarity¶

Manages Complexity¶
