Clarity¶
The decisive clarity is prying apart two things "working memory" silently fused: the passive maintenance of items across a delay and the active revision of what is held. Naming updating as a distinct, factor-analytically separable executive function makes "this task taxes maintenance" and "this task taxes updating" different testable claims. It also sharpens the eviction question, showing that what leaves the buffer is governed by relevance to the current task state, not simply by recency or decay.

Heterogeneous behavioural phenomena — n-back failures under load, keep-track drift, age- and ADHD-linked decline — fragment under a storage-only view into competing capacity stories. Updating recasts the buffer as a managed process with a small parameter set: how many chunks it holds, how fast items decay, and, crucially, that monitoring evicts by relevance rather than recency. From those, whether a task loads maintenance or revision reads off directly, and a deficit localizes to one sub-process rather than an undifferentiated "bad memory."
