One interaction can reach people who were never there¶
Cross-Domain EchoesShared pattern · Reputation
When a newsroom’s protection promise is breached, the damage can extend beyond the exposed source: people who have not yet approached the newsroom may become less willing to do so. On a translation marketplace, a completed job can leave a public rating that future clients consult before choosing a translator. Both carry consequences across time and across observers. An encounter with one party becomes part of the basis on which strangers decide whether to engage. This is more than a private feeling of trust between two people. The comparison also exposes a limit: a propagated record can be inaccurate or unfair, and the people rating a translation may not be able to assess all of its quality.
Choose a role to see its counterpart in both examples. The diagrams show relationships, not measured quantities.

A known breach can reduce the credibility of the promise for potential sources who have never yet contacted the newsroom.

Transaction-backed ratings and dispute history become visible where later clients choose whom to hire.
In this example: Ratings can be manipulated or miss quality that customers cannot judge; the record is not the work itself.
The later audience need not have participated in the event whose record they use.

What carries across
Ask how a record travels from the original encounter to future participants. Reputation changes incentives only where that history reaches people who can change future opportunities.
Where the comparison stops
A protection breach concerns vulnerable people and future disclosure; marketplace ratings concern service selection. Severity, remedy and ethical duties are not equivalent.
- The source-protection diagram conditions the effect on a known breach. It does not claim universal awareness or a quantified loss of future reporting.
- Ratings can be forged, retaliatory, selective or based on qualities the rater cannot assess. Cheap identity resets and one-shot participation weaken the reputation mechanism.
Conditions for this comparison
- The record reaches future counterparties and can affect their choices.
- An identity or institution persists long enough for past conduct to affect later opportunity.

Prime
Core Idea
Reputation is the aggregated, publicly available record of an agent's past behavior that propagates beyond the parties to the original interactions and governs how third parties treat the agent in future ones, a structure the economics of repeated interaction first made precise when Klein and Leffler (1981) modeled how the present value of a future reputation premium disciplines current quality.

Source Protection

Core Idea
it preserves the future channel by demonstrating to potential sources not yet contacted that coming forward is survivable.
What It Is Not
The load-bearing function is the *future channel*: protection demonstrates to not-yet-contacted sources that coming forward is survivable.

Example
After each job, the client rates accuracy, timeliness, and communication, and the score, the number of completed jobs, and any dispute history sit permanently on the translator's public profile.
How it works
Exposure puts that summary where selection happens, so it actually gates future opportunity.
When it helps, and when it misleads
The guard is to verify that feedback is transaction-backed and hard to forge, and to lean on reputation for behaviors the crowd can actually judge, backstopping the rest with contracts and monitoring.
