Hidden Premises & Reference Gaps

Primes about the gap between what is assumed, named, or nominally true and what actually holds, including unstated premises, shifted referents, mismatched shared models, unchecked preconditions, and control that tracks too slowly or only on paper.

10 primes in this family — primes that sit near one another in abstraction space (k-means over structural-signature embeddings). Each is shown with its short description.

  • Appellation — A stable opaque token is bound by an authoritative act to an entity and thereafter used to refer to it across contexts, decoupling reference from description.
  • Bracketing — Deliberately suspending a held frame from operative use within a scoped inquiry.
  • Close Reading — The disciplined posture of treating an artefact's smallest meaningful units as load-bearing evidence, suspending paraphrase until the grain is exhausted and binding every higher-order claim to cited marks.
  • Enthymeme — An argument whose load-bearing premises are deliberately left unstated for the audience to supply from shared assumptions, making the conclusion co-authored and the persuasion contingent on assumption-base match.
  • Equivocation — A single token is used with two distinct referents at two points in a chain that presumes meaning-fixity, so an apparently sound inference silently fails.
  • Inconsistent Shared Model — Subsystems hold mutually incompatible models of the same external state, undetected until a forcing event requires joint action.
  • Nominal vs. Actual Control — Every control exists as a documented nominal form and an enacted actual form, and the assurance apparatus usually samples only the former.
  • Reference Cadence Exceeds Tracking Bandwidth — When the signal a closed loop must track changes faster than the loop's bandwidth, persistent error follows that no amount of executor effort can close.
  • Unverified Precondition — An action presumes a referent exists at the moment of use without checking.
  • Zero-Force Null Baseline — A deliberately false idealised model with all named perturbing forces set to zero, whose empirical departures are read as attributable diagnoses of which forces operate and at what magnitude.
