Core Idea

Adaptive redirection occurs when evidence weakens a current course, an agent selects a materially different course while preserving the objective, and specific learning or capability accumulated on the old path is deliberately made useful on the new one. It is change with selective memory, not persistence, abandonment, or restart. A current course and objective exist; feedback disconfirms the course; persistence, redirection, and abandonment are distinguishable options; a new course is chosen; and retained knowledge, relationships, infrastructure, or capability is load-bearing after the change.

New Path, Same Goal

You're building a sandcastle, but the waves keep knocking it down. You still want a castle, so you move up the beach where the sand stays dry, and you bring your buckets and the tricks you learned about wet sand. That's adaptive redirection: a new plan, the same goal, and the old plan's leftovers helping out.

Change Course, Keep Your Tools

Adaptive redirection is what you do when your plan stops working but your goal still makes sense. Instead of stubbornly keeping on, or giving up and starting from nothing, you choose a really different plan. The important part is that you carry over something useful from the old plan, like skills, tools, friends, or information, and it does real work in the new plan. If you could throw away everything from before and the new plan would go just as well, that was a fresh start, not a redirection. And just giving the old plan a new name doesn't count either.

Pivot That Keeps Its Gains

Adaptive redirection is a response to evidence that a course of action is failing while its goal still stands. Five things must be true together: a course is underway toward a goal; the feedback undermines the course, not the goal; the agent could really have kept going, redirected, or quit, so this was a choice; the new course differs in a way that matters, not just in name; and something the old course produced, such as knowledge, tools, data, or relationships, is load-bearing in the new one. That last point has a test: delete the retained asset and ask whether the new path becomes slower, costlier, or impossible. This separates it from stubbornness (same course), starting over (nothing carried), and cosmetic "pivots" (only the label changes). It also excludes reroutes forced on the agent with no real alternative.

 

Adaptive redirection is a response to disconfirming feedback that is discontinuous in course but continuous in accumulated value. Five conditions must hold together. First, a course of action is underway toward an objective. Second, feedback weakens that particular course while leaving the objective intact. Third, the agent genuinely has three live options: persist, redirect, or abandon, so the change is a selection rather than a forced move. Fourth, the new course differs materially on some dimension that was carrying weight, not just in name or framing. Fifth, assets produced by the old course (knowledge, capabilities, tooling, data, relationships) remain load-bearing on the new one. The operational check is a deletion test applied to each retained asset: remove it, and the new course should become slower, costlier, or infeasible. This excludes incremental tuning, involuntary reroutes, rebranding, and fresh starts, all of which ordinary talk of 'pivots' tends to lump together, and it classifies cases without depending on how the change was announced or whether it worked out.
