Core Idea

A qualitative property is a substrate-independent attribute whose admissible values function as descriptions, categories or ordered labels rather than as quantities with meaningful numerical magnitude. The abstraction is not exhausted by its familiar source-domain notation. The operative mechanism is this: An observation or rule distinguishes states, assigns a nonnumeric label and supports equality, difference or perhaps order comparisons while withholding arithmetic operations not licensed by the value structure. The mechanism separates identity from observation. A case does not qualify merely because an observer can describe it using the word qualitative property; the constitutive relation must be present in the carrier.

The load-bearing invariant is that the property’s value determines a descriptive kind or category, and recognizing or comparing it does not require a meaningful numerical magnitude, unit or interval. Qualitative property sits at the structural end of the structural–framed spectrum. Its meaning is a formal constraint on a value structure: values mark kinds, states, or ordered categories without carrying numerical magnitude or arithmetic distance.

Terms such as attribute, category, and label describe the structure itself rather than importing a particular field's assumptions, and the prime carries no default evaluation. It has a measurement-and-classification origin but no necessary institutional referent and can be defined without human practice. Material phase, ecological occupancy, software lifecycle state, grammatical tense, and a clinical sign can all be represented qualitatively even though their assignment procedures differ.
