Core Idea

Rank-dependent value is the pattern in which some part of an outcome's value is determined by the holder's ordinal position in a comparison distribution, rather than by the outcome's absolute magnitude alone. A person's income can therefore matter partly because of what it buys and partly because of where it places the person among peers; a credential can matter partly because of what was learned and partly because of the rank it certifies; a biological trait's payoff can depend partly on how it compares with traits in the current population.

The decisive diagnostic is a rank-preserving shift. Raise every member's absolute level by the same amount or proportion while leaving the ordering unchanged. Any value that survives only as rank is unchanged even though every absolute quantity improved. This explains why positional competition can be privately rational yet collectively self-cancelling: each participant can improve position, but all participants cannot simultaneously move upward in the same ordering.

Many apparently different arms races reduce to one two-component model: an absolute component that can rise for everyone and a positional component indexed to rank. The split clarifies which interventions create real aggregate improvement, which merely reshuffle standing, and why individually sensible escalation can leave the population no better off.

positional_advantage assigns leverage to an occupied location in a value-graded space; rank_dependent_value assigns value to an outcome through its ordinal standing among alternatives or peers. zero_sum_game fixes total payoff by definition, whereas only the positional component here is rank-conserving and the absolute component may grow. scarcity is a supply-demand condition and can exist without rank-based valuation. other_regarding_preferences says others' outcomes enter an agent's evaluation; rank dependence specifies one particular comparative form and can also occur without a preference-bearing human agent, as in relative fitness.
