Selection-Visibility Gate¶
Core Idea¶
A selection-visibility gate occurs when a selector can retain or eliminate variants only to the extent that their consequences are expressed and observable when selection acts. Differences in expression or exposure therefore bias the surviving record away from the generated variant distribution. Variants are generated, consequences differ, a visibility mechanism exposes only some consequences, a selector acts on what is exposed, and retention changes accordingly. Visibility mediates selection; it is not merely missing measurement after selection.
Broad Use¶
Genetics, cultural transmission, moderation, testing, organizational promotion, and algorithm evaluation preserve variation–expression–selector–survival roles.
Clarity¶
Selection chooses among variants. Observation bias changes the analyst's sample. Here observability changes what the selecting process itself can act upon. Phenotypic expression, publication, audit sampling, and user exposure can each instantiate the gate.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns scattered cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
