Core Idea

A source-sink role is assigned by fixing a component, a reference pool, a tracked quantity, and an accounting window, then taking the sign of the component's net transfer. Net transfer toward the pool makes the component a source; net transfer away from the pool makes it a sink; zero marks balance. The designation belongs to the completed account, not intrinsically to the component. Changing the boundary, time window, or quantity can reverse it.

The prime prevents a conditional bookkeeping verdict from hardening into an essential property. “Source” is incomplete until the analyst states: source of what, relative to which pool, inside which boundary, and over what interval?

Manages Complexity

A complicated network of bidirectional exchanges becomes a signed ledger. Each component is reduced to one net contribution while the full balance remains recoverable as the sum of sources minus sinks.

Abstract Reasoning

The pattern licenses sign-flip analysis: identify which change in window, boundary, quantity, or underlying flows would move a component through zero. It also localizes aggregate change to components whose signed contributions grew, shrank, or reversed.

Knowledge Transfer

The tracked substance and domain vocabulary change, but the role structure does not: bounded component, reference pool, directed transfers, accounting window, net sign, and conditional reversal.
