Stated–Revealed Preference Gap¶
Core Idea¶
The stated–revealed preference gap is the systematic divergence between what an agent reports valuing and what the same agent appears to value when choosing among real alternatives. The two records are not direct views of a hidden preference. They are estimates produced through different access modes: a low-cost, constructed report channel and a situated choice channel shaped by menus, prices, defaults, constraints, attention, and timing.
The gap is informative precisely because neither side is automatically authoritative. A report can be hypothetical, socially shaped, or instrument-sensitive. A choice can be constrained, friction-bent, defaulted, or made under short-term pressures that defeat a longer-term valuation. Analysis therefore begins by explaining the divergence, not by declaring one measure true and the other false.

Clarity¶
The prime is broader than Knowledge-Action Gap, which requires correct knowledge, sincere intention, and an appropriate action. It is also different from Revealed Preference, which is an inference rule that normally privileges choice. This node names the disagreement itself and holds both channels open to diagnosis.
Manages Complexity¶
Say-do mismatches can be sorted by channel distortions rather than moralized as hypocrisy. The report side can be tested for social desirability, hypothetical bias, and wording effects. The choice side can be tested for constraints, defaults, friction, present bias, and incomplete menus. The pattern of divergence becomes evidence about the two contexts.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Estimate a stated ordering \(P_s\) and a revealed ordering \(P_r\) over aligned alternatives. A gap exists when their rankings or implied choices differ systematically. Then vary the report channel, the choice architecture, or both. Movement in \(P_s\) under wording changes diagnoses report-channel contribution; movement in \(P_r\) under menu or friction changes diagnoses choice-context contribution.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The same triangulation moves from privacy to health, voting, retirement, organizational compliance, and product adoption. The substantive goal changes, but the roles remain: a report, an enacted choice, a shared comparison frame, a persistent mismatch, and competing distortions on both sides.
Example¶
Employees report strong support for a retirement contribution rate but remain at a low enrollment level when the default is non-participation and enrollment requires several steps. Reversing the default tests whether the earlier behavior revealed a stable preference or a friction-shaped choice.

Distinction from Neighbors¶
