Summary Substance Divergence¶
Core Idea¶
An artifact is published through two coupled surfaces: a summary surface (short, high-attention, reach-optimized) and a substance surface (long, low-attention, evidence-bearing). They are authored by different actors under different success metrics, consumed by audiences that overlap but skew to the summary, and drift apart into two truth-conditions. The load-bearing point: this is durable structural divergence, not a correctable error, because each surface is locally rational and defended.
How would you explain it like I'm…
Front Of The Box
Headline Versus Article
Two Surfaces, Two Truths
Broad Use¶
- News media: headline versus body — the headline optimized for click-through, the body for accuracy.
- Scientific publishing: abstract versus paper — abstracts overstating effect size relative to the moderated results.
- Drug labeling: front-of-package efficacy claim versus the qualified patient leaflet — marketing versus regulatory affairs.
- Law: holding versus reasoning; bill title versus statutory text.
- Contracts and finance: term sheet versus final agreement; claims versus fine print.
- AI documentation: model-card intended-use section versus the evaluation appendix.
Clarity¶
It separates "the summary is wrong" (a writing failure) from "the surfaces are decoupled by different optimization pressures" (a structural failure), and explains why the gap persists across vigilance.
Manages Complexity¶
It compresses a wide family of "the headline oversold it" complaints into one diagnostic — which surface does each audience reach, under what author incentive? — and organizes interventions along a single axis: couple the surfaces.
Abstract Reasoning¶
It treats a publication not as one object with one meaning but as two coupled surfaces with independent reward functions, predicting divergence from the incentive-and-audience structure and measuring it as a tracked gap.
Knowledge Transfer¶
- Drug labels → food labels → news → finance → AI: the same two-surface structure recurs with different filter sets; the role-mapping (summary, substance, divergent authorship) is fixed.
- Intervention vocabulary: audit fidelity, structured templates, joint authorship, mandatory substance excerpts in summaries — all travel.
- Reverse transfer: an AI-documentation researcher reads the food-labeling literature and recognizes the identical structural problem.
Example¶
A paper's abstract is written to maximize citation and routinely states an effect as larger or more causal than the body's methods and limitations warrant; most readers see only the abstract, so a more rigorous limitations section does not reach them — the fix is coupling (structured abstracts that lock claim strength to the reported statistics), not a better methods section.
Not to Be Confused With¶
- Summary substance divergence is not Refinement because it is a durable divergence widened by competing reward functions, whereas refinement converges — more effort closes the gap.
- Summary substance divergence is not Information asymmetry because both surfaces are public and the gap is in attention, whereas asymmetry is about private information one party cannot access.
- Summary substance divergence is not Framing because it is the structural decoupling of two surfaces with separate authors, whereas framing is the interpretive angle on a single body of content.
