- The concept was coined by psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton in Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism (1961) to describe one mechanism of ideological totalism in Chinese prisons and revolutionary universities: phrases such as "imperialist" or "capitalist" served as complete authoritative answers to any question into which they could be inserted, not because they addressed the substance but because the institutional norms of the setting treated their production as a conclusive move
