Alternative label

Admit non-preferred surface forms that resolve silently to a concept's one canonical label — widening the search surface so any variant finds the concept, while the preferred form alone governs every display and authoritative output.

Core Idea

An alias label is a non-preferred surface form that a controlled vocabulary admits as a recognized alternative to a concept, kept subordinate to one canonical label. SKOS encodes it as skos:altLabel alongside the single skos:prefLabel. The structural commitment is a three-way relation — a concept with stable identity, an authority-designated canonical label, and admitted alias variants — completed by a redirect-at-use rule: a user's alias maps silently to the concept and returns results under the canonical form.

Clarity

The concept makes legible that two seemingly opposed goals are separable: a vocabulary wants to be found by users who don't know its preferred terms, and wants its displays consistent.
