Herbert Weir Smyth defines the Greek rhetorical and grammatical phenomenon as an inadvertent or purposeful deviation in sentence structure by which a construction begun at the start is not followed consistently. Propose the minimally repaired completion of the opening, then show how the actual continuation follows another plan. Keep grammatical discontinuity distinct from a logical non sequitur. Treat authorial intent as an interpretive claim supported by genre, revision, performance, or repeated pattern; do not infer intent from elegance alone.

An utterance unfolds before its ending is known. Syntax predicts dependencies, but attention, memory, emotion, and new information can redirect production. Anacoluthon makes this conflict locally analyzable.
