Apprehension (understanding)¶
The mental act of becoming aware of or conceiving an object without yet affirming or denying anything about it.
Core Idea¶
This historical technical sense differs from anxiety or arrest, apprehension supplies content but lacks truth value and judgment is the separate act that affirms or denies a proposition about the conceived object. Attention presents or forms a concept of an object in consciousness; because no predication or assent is added, the act can furnish material for later judgment without itself being true or false. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Apprehension (understanding) belongs to philosophy of mind and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed philosophy of mind carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundaries, and comparison targets, then evaluate the cognizing subject and presented object, perceptual or conceptual content, act of simple awareness or conception, absence of affirmation and denial, lack of truth value, transition to comparison and judgment, historical faculty-psychology context and distinction from sensation perception comprehension and emotional apprehension are explicit.
Clarity¶
