Attrition Warfare

Attrition warfare is a theory of victory in which a belligerent seeks decision not through positional manoeuvre, surprise, or the moral collapse of an adversary but by gradually exhausting the adversary's war-making capacity — soldiers, materiel, industrial output, treasure, and political will — until it falls below the threshold required to continue the contest. Victory is the steady-state outcome of unequal depletion rates: if the attriting side can impose costs on the adversary faster than the adversary can replace them, and sustain that rate without its own reserves running out first, then time favours the attriting side.

The German offensive at Verdun in 1916 is the doctrine's defining design. General Erich von Falkenhayn conceived it not as a bid to seize ground but as an explicitly attritional operation: he chose a fortress-city of such national and symbolic weight that France would be compelled to defend it at any cost, feeding division after division into a narrow sector where German artillery could destroy them. The stated aim — to "bleed France white" — was to impose casualties on the French army faster than France could replace them.
